Second Grade Homeroom
CURRICULUM
a. RELIGION – We will use the "Christ Our Life" Faith Formation Program. Your children will journey together toward a deeper understanding of our religious beliefs and traditions. Parents will be receiving information for this year’s meetings and sacrament celebrations soon. Children will be required to attend a Jesus Day in preparation for First Communion. Before the weekend, children will bring home Explaining God’s Word pamphlet on Sunday’s gospel.
b. MATH – Includes a meeting board where we practice a wide variety of math skills. We do a lesson each day which includes a computation, problem solving, measurement, geometry, money, time, identifying patterns, fractions, graphs and charts. Number facts are introduced slowly and practiced every day. Number facts should also be practiced at home to help your child improve scores on fact sheets. Please continue to check side B when it comes home. At times, side B will be done in school and used for a grade.
c. READING, PHONICS, SPELLING AND LANGUAGE – Children will be divided into groups based on reading skills working with either Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Siegel or Mrs. Martineau.
d. HANDWRITING – The Printed Zaner-Bloser Alphabet will be reviewed. The children will begin learning cursive when we feel that their fine motor skills are developed enough.
e. SCIENCE, HEALTH AND SOCIAL STUDIES – Units will taken following the graded courses of study.
DISCIPLINE
a. Rules of discipline are posted in the classroom and in the handbook.
1) Disciplinary actions for inappropriate behavior are described in the Parent/Student Handbook. A note on the homework sheet will alert you of any daily problems.
2) Children are taught to handle their conflicts using Conflict management. Sorry Cards will be used by the children to make themselves and you aware of choices they made that were inappropriate.
3) A Pink Conduct Referral Form will be used to notify you of inappropriate behavior after three sorry cards in one quarter.
Occasionally, rewards will be given for good behavior.
GENERAL INFORMATION
a. HOMEWORK- Your child will bring home a homework sheet each day to be reviewed and signed by one parent and returned the next day. Please keep this sheet in the right side of the homework folder all week.
b. CORRECTED PAPERS –
1) Some papers will be graded with check+, check , and check -.
2) Papers applied toward a report card grade will include a percentage and letter grade.
3) Papers marked with "W.D.T.T." means "WE DID THIS TOGETHER" in class.
c. SUPPLIES –
1) Your child will need a rainy day activity book for use in school.
2) When new crayons are needed, a box of 24 should be purchased.
3) Your child should have a book in school at all times to enjoy reading.
d. MONEY – All money brought to school by your child should be put in an envelope marked with his/her name and money purpose.
e. BIRTHDAYS - Your child is invited to celebrate his/her birthday in school and may bring in a treat for the class. We have 29 in Rm.8 & 28 in Rm. 9 and would appreciate receiving sufficient napkins. Summer birthdays may be celebrated as follows: June birthdays in January, July birthdays in February, and August birthdays in March. Please send in only individually wrapped treats. No cake, cupcakes or sprinkle donuts.
f. SNACK – We recommend that your child bring one nutritional snack for our morning break. Children should not bring drinks, fruit cups, puddings, etc. Please avoid messy foods as we will be doing work during this time. A napkin should be sent in with the snack.
g. TRANSPORTATION – If your child will not be returning home by normal transportation (bus, car, etc.) please send in a note to advise us. Please notify the school if a permanent change in transportation will occur.
h. CAR RIDERS – Please remember that drop off time is no sooner than 7:25 a.m. Afternoon pick up is approximately 2:15 p.m. after the buses leave. Please avoid arriving earlier for you child unless it is an emergency.
i. SCHOLASTIC BOOKS – At times, forms to order will be sent home offering books written on your child’s reading level. To order, you should complete and return the form along with cash or a check payable to "Scholastic Book Club".
SPECIAL EDUCATION OFFERS – Occasionally, your child will bring home brochures offering special educational materials ( e.g. HIGHLIGHTS MAGAZINE). To purchase such material, included order forms should be completed and returned. Please note that some special offers will contain a "NO" box to check if you are not interested. Please check this box if you are not placing an order and sign and return the form to school. Our class can receive free products for submitting a specific number of forms.
